Since John Bloor built their first home in 1969, they’ve established a reputation for building quality homes that stand the test of time.
The family continues to own and operate the business over 50 years later, upholding the high construction standards established over the years. Equally important is our collaboration with Bloor Homes Western Region to maintain the safety of their workforce and construction sites through our fall protection systems.
When the Surveyor from Bloor Homes Western asked us to carry out an audit of the StairSpan fall prevention solutions across all 13 of their sites, we at Oxford Safety Components were more than happy to assist.
Bloor Homes recognised the necessity of evaluating their existing equipment to ensure that their operatives had adequate StairSpan safe access work platforms. This assessment was crucial for maintaining project timelines and, most importantly, for ensuring the safety of their team while working at heights.
The StairSpan System is the ideal solution for working safely at height in stairwells and on staircases. When installed, this system not only provides essential fall protection but also serves as a fully operational working platform.
Each system can be assembled quickly, maintains visibility both above and below at all times, and features a distinctive design that allows the StairSpan mat to open and close with ease, providing full access to each floor.
The StairSpan is highly adaptable and can be configured for a wide variety of stair designs, including:
Straight, Top-winder, Bottom-winder, Full-winder, Dog-legged, Right-Angled, Top & Bottom Winder, Quarter-Landing, Half-Landing, and Bulkhead.

The audit process was thorough and well-coordinated, spanning across 13 Bloor sites in the region, with Carrie-Anne and Paul playing key roles in ensuring everything was aligned and organized. Using a comprehensive list detailing pricing for the StairSpan Systems required for the varying stairwell configurations for each individual house type, the team submitted a supporting proposal.
Following the completion of the audit, 6 out of the 13 sites placed orders for a further 23 StairSpan systems and additional components, proving Bloor Homes is committed to maintaining safety standards across their sites.
The positive feedback from Bloor Homes is a clear testament to the success of the project, especially with the Oxford Safety team’s professional handling of the audits and proposal preparation. It’s also promising that they are considering extending the audit process across all other regions to further supplement their use of the StairSpan systems to meet their project needs.
