One of the UK’s largest privately owned housebuilding companies, with a long-established presence across England and Scotland. Over time they have grown from a regional Scottish builder into a major national developer focused on residential communities.
With a network of 11 regional office across the UK, each regional office oversees land acquisition, planning, construction delivery, and sales for developments in its area, enabling the company to operate as a locally responsive but nationally coordinated housebuilder.
Our client was experiencing significant safety, access, and productivity challenges when carrying out works within stairwells across its residential developments.
Traditional access solutions, such as scaffolding and other temporary platforms, were often expensive to install, time-consuming to erect, and frequently unsuitable for the increasingly complex stairwell configurations encountered on modern housing developments.

As part of a targeted marketing initiative “Site Manager Meetings” Campaign, Oxford Safety Components had the opportunity to showcase the StairSpan to a Site Manager who was actively facing these challenges on site.
The StairSpan stairwell protection system prevents falls into stairwells, voids, and stairways while providing a stable working platform.
The system is easy to use and can be installed in minutes; its flexible design means it can adapt to different configurations whilst ensuring the stair access remains unobstructed, allowing work to continue without interruption.
The systems can be reused and relocated to different properties across the site, as and when required. We also provide an inspection and repair service to increase the longevity of our products, making them a sustainable option.

Recognising the potential benefits, the Site Manager agreed to undertake a pilot trial to evaluate the system in a live construction environment.

The pilot proved highly successful. The system was able to overcome the access limitations associated with challenging stairwell layouts while significantly reducing setup time and improving operational efficiency for site teams. Following the successful trial, a method statement and supporting documentation were distributed across all developments within the Northeast region, enabling wider adoption of the system.
Positive feedback from site teams and management quickly led to the solution being implemented across multiple developments throughout the region. OSC is currently working with the business to expand its use throughout the company's other regional divisions.
